Hernia Repair in Nagpur

Hernia repair is a surgical procedure performed to treat a hernia, which occurs when an organ or tissue protrudes through a weak spot in the surrounding muscle or connective tissue. Hernias can develop in various areas of the body, but they most commonly occur in the abdomen, particularly in the groin (inguinal hernia), umbilicus (umbilical hernia), or at the site of a previous surgical incision (incisional hernia).

Types of Hernia Repair:
Open Hernia Repair:
  • In an open hernia repair, the surgeon makes an incision directly over the hernia site.
  • The protruding tissue or organ is gently pushed back into its proper position, and the weakened muscle or connective tissue is reinforced.
  • This reinforcement may involve using stitches (sutures) to repair the muscle, or it may involve placing a synthetic mesh over the weakened area to provide additional support.
  • Once the repair is complete, the incision is closed with sutures or surgical staples.
Laparoscopic Hernia Repair:
  • Laparoscopic hernia repair, also known as minimally invasive or keyhole surgery, is performed using small incisions and specialized surgical instruments.
  • During this procedure, the surgeon inserts a thin, flexible tube with a camera (laparoscope) through a small incision near the hernia site. This allows them to view the internal structures on a monitor.
  • Additional small incisions are made to insert surgical instruments, which are then used to repair the hernia using stitches or mesh.
  • Laparoscopic hernia repair typically results in smaller incisions, less postoperative pain, and faster recovery compared to open surgery.
Recovery and Postoperative Care:

After hernia repair surgery, patients are typically monitored in the recovery area until they are stable and alert. Depending on the type of surgery and individual factors, patients may be discharged home on the same day (outpatient surgery) or may require an overnight stay in the hospital.
During the recovery period, patients are advised to follow their surgeon’s instructions carefully, which may include:

  • Pain Management: Taking prescribed pain medications and applying ice packs to the surgical site as needed to reduce pain and swelling.
  • Activity Restrictions: Avoiding strenuous activities, heavy lifting, and driving for a period specified by the surgeon.
  • Wound Care: Keeping the surgical incision clean and dry, and following any instructions regarding wound dressings or bathing.
  • Dietary Changes: Following a soft or liquid diet initially, then gradually reintroducing solid foods as tolerated.
  • Follow-up Appointments: Attending scheduled follow-up appointments with the surgeon to monitor healing and address any concerns.

Most patients can resume normal activities within a few weeks after hernia repair surgery, although strenuous activities and heavy lifting should be avoided for a longer period as advised by the surgeon. It’s important for patients to communicate openly with their healthcare providers throughout the recovery process and to seek medical attention if they experience any complications or unusual symptoms.
